Cagliari Calcio is pleased to announce that it signed Martín Cáceres: the Uruguayan player has signed a contract until 30 June 2022.
Born in Montevideo on 7 April 1987, he began his professional career at Defensor Sporting, the team of his hometown, where he played from 2005 to 2007. At the age of twenty he moved to Spain to initially wear the jersey of Recreativo Huelva (36 matches and 3 goals) and then, in the following season, moving to Barcelona: here he will play 23 times, giving his contribution to the conquest of the "treble", Champions League, Liga and Copa del Rey.
The following year he joined Juventus (21 games and 1 goal), before returning after a season in Spain at Sevilla: in Andalusia he collected 55 games and 2 goals in a season and a half. In January 2012 he chooses to be back to Turin: in his second experience with the bianconeri he will win 5 Scudetti in a row (from 2012 to 2016), 2 Italian Cups (2015 and 2016) and 3 Super Cups (2012, 2013, 2015).
After a brief spell in the Premiere League in Southampton, he returns to Serie A. He starts the 2017-18 season with Verona (15 matches and 3 goals), in January 2018 he moves to Lazio: he will play with the Biancocelesti until January 2019, playing 18 games and scoring 1 goal; then Juventus again, where he will win his sixth Italian Champion medal. In the summer of 2019 the transfer to Fiorentina: in two seasons he played 61 games and scored 4 goals.
A cornerstone of the Uruguayan national team, he won the 2011 edition of the America’s Cup and took part in the last three World Cups (2010, 2014, 2018): with the Celeste his record is 107 matches and 4 goals.
Cáceres can play both in a back line with 3 and 4 defenders, central or lateral, also used as a winger in a a 5 defenders system. In the defending phase, he asserts his solidity and stubbornness in man marking; pace and technical qualities allow him to be particularly valuable even when it is about to push forward, with several crosses and assists for his teammates. Thanks to his ability to attack, to his precise shot, he knows how to score: even with headers, exploiting his good elevation and sense of position.
Winning mentality, international experience at the highest levels. Class, personality and temper, all this now at the service of Cagliari: “El Pelado” will be the twenty-third Uruguayan footballer to wear the Rossoblù jersey.
Bienvenido a Cerdeña, Martín!
